Cultura y Cocteles – A Fusion of Flavors and Rhythms

Last week, I had the distinct pleasure of attending the launch of Cultura y Cocteles at the Hyatt Trinidad. Let me tell you, if you’ve ever dreamed of combining your love for exquisite cocktails and appetizers with the vibrancy of Latin American culture this is an event you’ll want to add to your calendar. Every Thursday night, the Hyatt will now transform into a hub of Latin rhythms and tantalizing tastes, featuring cultural displays and culinary delights, all in collaboration with the Latin embassies here in Trinidad.

This inaugural night was a celebration of everything I adore about Latin cuisine and culture – warm hospitality, rich history, and bold flavors. There were cultural highlights from the embassies of Mexico, Peru, and Venezuela. Each one bringing a unique touch to the evening, making it feel like a mini tour through some of Latin America’s most flavorful and dynamic countries. From tacos to quesadillas to guacamole, it was an evening packed with culinary inspirations that had me itching to get back to my kitchen to recreate these delicacies at home. But first, let me walk you through this exciting experience.

A Night of Discovery: Flavors, Music, and More

The night opened with live performances by Voces de Promesa, setting the tone with their passionate renditions of Latin favorites. The music alone transported us to the heart of Latin America, but it was the tequila tasting class that truly piqued my curiosity. Hosted by the Mexican Embassy, we were treated to a tasting of Selección Imperial Tequila, where I learned that tequila is much more complex than what we often think. We sampled three different varieties: Blanco, Reposado, and Añejo. Now, I’ve always enjoyed the occasional margarita, but this was a revelation. Tequila, like rum or whiskey, can be nuanced, layered, and utterly captivating.

Let me break down the types of tequila for you, just as I learned:

1. Blanco: Bottled immediately after distillation, giving it a sharp edge and an intensity similar to our local white rum.

2. Reposado: Aged between 2-12 months, with honey-like notes that mellow the intensity. This was a crowd favorite!

3. Añejo: Aged between 1-3 years, giving it a smooth, rich flavor profile tinged with hints of stone fruit. My personal favorite, and one I’ll definitely be adding to my collection.

The tequila tasting was a reminder of how cooking, much like tequila production, is an art form. It’s all about patience, knowing your ingredients, and giving each element the time and attention it deserves. If you’re like me, always seeking to explore new flavors and perfect culinary techniques, then nights like this are an inspiration to dive deeper into Latin cuisine.

Cultural and Culinary Showcases: A Taste of What’s to Come

What I loved most about Cultura y Cocteles is how it blended Latin heritage with local touches, offering an experience that was both familiar and new. The Hyatt promises to spotlight different embassies every Thursday night, meaning each week offers a new culinary adventure. And for those of you who enjoy a little dance with your dinner, the last Thursday of every month will feature performances by the Caribbean & Latin Dance Association of Trinidad and Tobago (CALDATT).

Imagine dining on the perfect quesadilla, sipping on a well-crafted margarita, while watching expert dancers twirl to the sensual beats of salsa. It’s the kind of evening that leaves an impression, the kind of night that lingers with you long after it ends.

Culinary Inspiration: Bringing Latin Flavors Home

Guacamole - Hyatt Trinidad - Latin nights trinidad

As I savored each bite of the appetizers (the guacamole was so creamy, with just the right amount of lime!), I couldn’t help but think of my own kitchen. For those of us who love to cook but may feel daunted by unfamiliar cuisines, these events offer the perfect opportunity to learn. Latin dishes like tacos and quesadillas are approachable and endlessly customizable – perfect for home cooks who may feel nervous about attempting more complex dishes.

Here are a few tips I picked up that can help you master these Latin-inspired dishes at home:

Guacamole: It’s all about balance – lime juice and salt are your best friends here. Don’t be afraid to taste and adjust until you get that perfect creamy, tangy bite.

Tacos: Simplicity is key. Whether it’s shredded chicken or slow-cooked beef, let the ingredients shine. And remember, a good taco is all about the tortilla – if you can, go for fresh corn tortillas.

Tequila Pairing: After the tasting, I’ll definitely be more mindful of the types of tequila I use in my drinks. A smooth Añejo works beautifully in a cocktail, while a bold Blanco is perfect for a classic margarita.
