It’s been far too long since my last Tuesdays with Dorie post. Truth be told, I think I was extremely disheartened after the disaster that was my attempt at the Coconut-Pineapple Dacquoise. Not that it tasted bad, but I put so much time, energy and money into it, that any disappointment was really too much for me with my stress levels at the level they were at. Now, I’ve cooled off, had a chance to restabilize and ready to put the flour back on my hands!
These Espresso Cheescake brownies combine a dense chocolatey brownie base with a light creamy espresso cheesecake layer. Brownie batter is also swirled through the cheesecake layer to create a lovely marbled pattern.
I ended up loving the marble effect so much that I was loathe to cover it all with the suggested sour cream icing. Still, I wanted to give it an honest try, so I decided to test the icing on a quarter of the brownie. After giving the result a taste I decided that I could forgo topping the rest, and I really don’t think that the brownies have suffered for it.
So how do they taste? I wish I could say that they were jaw droppingly good, but I was a little underwhelmed. The textural difference between the brownie batter and the cheesecake filling was a little disconcerting for me, but the flavours were solid and satisfying. It’s a bit of a shame as the visuals are just so stunning
In the future though I think I’ll keep my brownies as brownies and my cheesecakes as cheesecake and never again shall the two meet

This month marks the third installment of my “CookALong” series where a prominent (usually) Caribbean personality follows one of my recipes, and sometimes throws in a few of their own This week however I’m shaking things up a bit by ...

I love your website. I also appreciate that you are such a good writer. This was a very cute post.

I am glad that you tried this. I saw this on david lebovitz’s blog and they looked good but I hesitated because I thought that too much of a good thing may not necessarily always be a good thing! I am glad that you confirmed it! I remember once trying a cheesecake recipe that combined all of my favourite things, peanut butter, caramel sauce, chocolate, reeses pieces, and oreos I really wanted to like this recipe…I was especially drawn to it by the attractive photo. However after making this dessert I will reconsider having them all at the same time as I suffered from sensory overload. It was just too rich for my liking and the peanut butter flavour overshadowed everything else for me. Interestingly this recipe was rated highly by everyone else on the site.

Arita- Thanks!
Wizzythestick – It’s all down to preferences in the end, but like you I prefer moderation and maybe a little more simplicity
That cheesecake recipe sounds like something I would order a big slice of in a coffee shop and not be able to finish

I’m sorry these didn’t bowl you over, but kudos to you for taking the plunge again after a disappointing last recipe. I know how challenging that can be!

I liked these, but do agree each element can reach greater heights individually. I was taken with the appearance that I forgot to put the topping on, so I’m glad to know you liked them without the topping too.
